Ella’s Fourth Birthday Interview

Last year I started a new birthday tradition for Ella (and I’ll start it with Troy when he turns 3) with this birthday interview. It is hard to believe that Ella is four, although, her uncooperative spirit during the questioning reminds me of how “old” she really is getting : ). She wanted to answer questions, just not the way we expected her to answer them.

Happy 2nd Birthday Troy!

Happy Birthday Troy!

It is amazing how grown-up you seem these days. I recently took you to out to take pictures for your two year old birthday, and I couldn’t believe the difference in how well you listened and followed my instructions during the photo shoot as compared to your 18 month photos. Six months make a big difference at this age!

You love to color, and often ask to color. You are starting to learn some of your letters, and you can identify “A” and “T” and sometimes “B.” You also know a lot of the sounds the letters make because you and Ella love to watch these videos from KidsTV123. You love to sing “A is for apple, a a apple!” You even frequently ask for “abcs” or “cat” (cat is for the letter “c” in the video).

120828IMG_7350.jpg

You really like Mickey Mouse (aka “couse”) as well as Woody. You like to sleep with your Mickey Mouse and Woody and always ask for them before you go to sleep. You also really enjoy actually playing with your toys. You make your animals walk around and make animal noises. You drive your cars around. Although these things seem simple, these were things Ella never really did with her toys – she just didn’t (and still doesn’t for the most part) play with her toys like that.120915IMG_7796.jpg120915IMG_7762.jpg120921IMG_8430.jpg

You have a big personality. Although that big personality sometimes manifests itself as frustration, it also shows through your big smiles and laughs, as well as a sweet shyness at times. You love to make yourself laugh as well as others around you, In fact, you feed off of people laughing at you.120918IMG_8119.jpg

You love singing, and actually have a pretty good feel for the tunes of songs. You can almost sing the entire song of “Jesus Loves Me” (just missing a few words), as well as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” You also chime in on many other songs and also do the hand motions. Speaking of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” one your favorite things to do is to run around the room with Ella right before bed singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and the “ABCs.”120921IMG_8401.jpg

You went to your first two year old Bible class this past month. You’ve been a bit unsure about it (upset when we drop you off), but you have been generally OK once you are actually engaged in class. I think it was mostly a few things coming together at once to make your first experience a little scary to you, and I think you are really going to love being in the older class.  With our help you’ve also started saying prayers. There’s also been a time when you said one by yourself in a slew of fast speech: “God, thank you Ella mama daddy Amen!”

Your speech continues to impress me. You speak in more and more sentences all the time. You also speak SO fast and with a lot of inflection. We often joke you are speaking in a foreign language!

(Side note: I saw the idea for the above photo on Pinterest)

Signs you do: more, finished, milk, hungry, thank you, please, thirsty, sleepy, bath

Words you say: No way I can even count or name them! You say so many things!

Animal noises you make: chicken, duck, cow, dog, horse, frog, pig, cat

Body parts you identify: nose, eyes, mouth, ears, hair, head, hands, belly, shoulders, teeth, tongue (you love to point out your teeth and belly)

Favorite foods:  Generally your favorites are yogurt, cheese, peaches, beans, chicken, and crackers. You also LOVE to dip.

Favorite activities: walking, running, and tip-toeing to explore everything, especially following Ella or chasing a dog; mimicking Ella; reading books; watching Mickey Mouse or Finding Nemo or Cars or How to Train Your Dragon; playing with balls (you love to throw any kind of ball); playing outside; playing with toys, especially talking on the phone or putting things over your head or playing with the kitchen stuff; trying get any electronics or drinks you can spot.

Happy 1st Birthday Troy!

Happy Birthday Troy!

Wow, I really cannot believe you are a year old!

When Ella turned a year old, I commented that I had become a better person because of having her in our lives. I can say the same thing about you being in my life. I am so thankful  for the blessing that you have been and continue to be in my life.

100924-IMG_0224

 100929-IMG_0439.jpg

I love how you are a snuggly baby when you are sleepy. I love how the song “Jesus Loves Me” calms you unlike any other song. I love how you like the company of others, and hate when anyone leaves your sight. I love  your face and laugh when your dad gets a “Troy snack” and cuddles and tickles you at the same time. I love how when you are really sleepy and I am in the process of laying you down, you stick your thumb in your mouth before you even hit the crib. I also love how you immediately roll over and tuck your legs under you when you hit the crib.  I love how you can get your point across without even knowing many real words. I love how you smile and laugh at your sister. And, I could go on, and on, and on.

 110923IMG_9033.jpg

This month you have really seemed like you’ve grown up quite a bit. About a  week before you turned one, you finally learned to crawl properly (rather than just bellyflop/inchworm). You are getting better and better at pulling up and cruising along the furniture. You attempted to take one step without holding onto anything, and you fell flat on your face, but you didn’t seem to care. You’ve figured out how to push my barriers out of your way. You sit on your knees a lot, and I think it is funny. You’ve started throwing things out of your crib.   Although we haven’t transitioned you off the bottle yet, I think you are ready for it. You don’t seem that attached to it, and you often throw it aside (Ella would carry it around with her everywhere). You learned how to do “touchdown” and you also put your arms up to “grow” when we sing “Read your Bible and pray everyday.”

Sign you do: more

Words you say: Dada, Mama, and something that sounds kinda like Ella : )

Favorite Food: banana, whatever everyone else is eating (you always want what everyone has)

Favorite Activities: crawling and exploring everything, especially following after your sister; trying to get any electronics or drinks you can spot : )

Happy 2nd Birthday Ella!

Happy 2nd Birthday Ella!

110129-IMG_8185.jpg

I realize this post is almost a week late, but that's how life goes sometimes. Things have been pretty crazy busy this past week! I still cannot believe that you are already two years old!

It is so hard to begin this post because you are doing so many amazing things these days that I don't even know where to begin or what I should include. Every moment is so special to me. I never realized how much fun having a toddler could be until I had you! You are funny, sweet, precious, cute, and smart. You always make me smile. You test our patience a lot as well, but that is part of growing up and figuring out your boundaries.

You like to inform us about what is going on, even though it is obvious.  For instance, when Troy is crying you’ll say “Troy crying,” then “Mama, Troy crying,” then “Daddy, Troy crying!” You've really started giving us directions (aka bossing us around). You'll see the TV remote and tell us to put on one of your favorite shows (your favorite is Clifford The Big Red Dog right now) or you'll tell us to read a book or you'll tell us to stand or sit in a particular location. Your language skills amaze me daily. You are speaking more and more clearly, and your sentence structure continues to grow.
110201-IMG_8327.jpg

You are still a great big sister. You are so proud of Troy, and it is hard to describe how I feel when you say "I love you Troy!" You still like to help out with Troy - in the photo below you were spinning the toys on his bouncer to entertain him.
110118-IMG_7626.jpg

You continue to love to sing. Even though it has been a month since Christmas, you love to sing "Frosty the Snowman!" Other favorite songs include "Jesus Loves Me" and "Roll the Gospel Chariot Along." You have been doing great in the two year old Bible class. You are very proud of your work when you come out of class.

You love to color and draw. You got an Aquadoodle mat for Christmas, and you have already almost worn it out from coloring and drawing so much! One day I looked down and you were just drawing a bunch of straight lines. I was impressed and so was your dad - he said he couldn't even draw lines that straight!

110119-IMG_7691.jpg

You love to identify the letters you know, and I'm always impressed when you shout out "A!" or "B!" when you see them whether it be in a book, on TV, or even on the wall at a restaurant. Right now you can identify A, B, C, E, L, and sometimes D. You can also count to 10 . . . well, most of the time, when you don't forget 9! I'm thankful you got over counting "1, 2, . . .4!" and finally remembered to include 3.

110108-IMG_7134.jpg

We celebrated your birthday by going to dinner, going to a movie, and going to get dessert afterwards. We had such a great time!
Favorite foodseggs,  noodles (especially with meat and red sauce), bread (rolls), crackers, cookies (animal cookies), rice, cereal, lunch meat, tortillas

Favorite games/activities: coloring, playing with stickers, running around, dressing up (yourself or monkey), reading (some favorite books right now include Handy Manny Flicker Book, The Foot Book, and There's No Place Like Space), doing puzzles, pretending to cook

The Paper Mama Photo Challenge: Birthday

This theme fell at a perfect time: Ella's birthday is Tuesday, and we did a litle celebrating with one set of the grandparents this weekend. I think this shot of Ella eating her cake is just precious. It is amazing how far she's come in a year - last year she couldn't use a fork!

Swingin'

For Ella's birthday, one of the presents we got her was a swing to hang from our tree in the backyard. We've had lots of cold and rainy weather, but the weather was finally nice enough today for us to put the swing up. Ella loved it!

Ella LOVES Cake!

Here are some videos my friend took of Ella's cake smash at her surprise party. I'll let the videos speak for themselves!

A Wonderful Surprise

I never planned anything official for Ella's birthday. I did let her dig into her cake (a milk-free one) because I couldn't resist the cake smash, and she got a few presents but that was all we did for her birthday.
But, my wonderful husband and my friends planned a surprise get together last night for Ella's birthday. I was totally shocked by the surprise. The surprise truly made me realize how blessed we are in our lives with all the wonderful friends who showed up to celebrate Ella's first birthday. On top of everyone coming, there were milk-free cupcakes and a milk-free chocolate cake, just for Ella! Ella LOVED the chocolate - it was her first time having chocolate. My husband grabbed my camera, but he didn't know I was charging the battery, so I didn't get any pictures of her myself. Thankfully, some of my friends had their cameras and took a few pictures. If you can't tell, she loved the cake!

I am so thankful to have all these wonderful friends surrounding us, and supporting us, especially as we raise Ella. We are truly blessed!

Here are a few other random shots from the day of her birthday. Yes, I am a mean mom who took her daughter for shots on her birthday (notice the band-aids in one of the pictures). Thankfully, she didn't know it was her birthday! Ella weighed 20 lbs, 10 oz at her appointment. It is hard to believe she was 7 lbs, 5 oz a year ago!

Oh, and if you want to check out daily pictures of Ella, be sure to visit my Project 365 blog

Happy 1st Birthday Ella

Today is really bittersweet. Today Ella turns 1 year old. I'm amazed and excited that we've made it to this happy milestone, yet I'm sad because Ella isn't that little, tiny baby I held for the first time a year ago.
(Side note: Isn't it amazing how much all of her birthmarks have faded? In her newborn picture she has them on her forehead, and both eyelids. Now, the ones on her eyelids are virtually gone, and the one on her forehead is faded to very pale.)

Ella has certainly brightened our lives. I honestly believe that I am a better person because of her. I am a better person because of the sacrifices I've had to make for her. I'm a better person because I've worked toward putting others first. I'm a better person because of the care I have to give her. I'm a better person because I've been able to observe her sweet innocence. I'm a better person because of the focus she has brought to our lives. I'm a better person because of the patience I've learned from her. I'm a better person because of the love she has brought into my life.

We have certainly faced challenges in our lives because we have Ella; however, I feel as though I've come through the challenges a better person, and I only hope that I continue to grow. I am so thankful to have Ella in our lives!

Happy Birthday Ella! We love you!!
